One Greater Manchester side fields an non-professional vets squad with nine ex- top-flight footballers in their present lineup.

Two Hundred Twenty-Two Premier League Goals, 325 Global Caps

Wythenshawe Vets Over 35s are based in southern Manchester and play in the Cheshire-based Vets Division Top Tier.

The lineup this season boasts 9 former Premier League players, with a combined nearly 1,800 elite appearances.

This elite squad also boasts 222 Premier League goals and 325 international caps.

The squad feature Papiss Cisse, who scored thirty-seven goals in over 100 games for Newcastle United after joining them for nine million pounds from German league club Freiburg in 2012.

Stephen Ireland began turning out for the team in preseason this summer through good mate and present Wythenshawe teammate Blake Norton, and the ex- Republic of Ireland midfielder then asked other ex-pros, who all play in a midweek small-sided match, to participate.

So great is the squad depth at Wythenshawe, Niasse had his debut at full-back.

"It's a little unusual but then, I enjoy sprinting and just move inside - I'm not defending that much," he said.

"I tell my defender 'I'm not hanging back' and that I'm just going to continue running.

"The movement is what I'm after. It's good fun."

'Surreal Scenario

Along with Cisse's six goals on debut, Stephen Ireland has netted eight in three games for the side, while George Boyd hit 5 on his first appearance and Joleon Lescott, a defender by trade, notched a triple in one match up front.

The team are leading of the Top Tier with 3 victories from three and a GD of plus nineteen.

One opponent, thirty-eight, who features on the wing for Collegiate OB, came up against former Latics defender Maynor Figueroa on Sunday - and had to tell his nine-year-old son who Emile Heskey was.

Figueroa has played at two global tournaments for his country, in as well as playing in more than two hundred top-flight matches.

"We really haven't ceased chatting about it - I was calling my mum and brother on the journey home.

"They were all dead sound, shaking our hands after the match - it was like playing a bunch of regular guys.

"Now we can't wait for the return match."
